Small Biz Series- Burnout: Sources, Signs and Solutions

Monday, May 16, 2022

“Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:

• feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;

• increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and

• reduced professional efficacy.

Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.”

In this session, Ruth Pearce will explore the most common contributors to burnout, signs that burnout is around the corner and steps we can take to prevent and reverse burnout.

The session will identify:

• 6 leading sources of burnout

• The relationship between individual behavior and the systems in which we work

• 5 signs to look for in ourselves and others that warn of burnout

• 4 ways to start the process of tackling burnout

To get ready for the session, you may want to take your Burnout Assessment here:

This validated assessment based on the work of Maslach was developed in the Netherlands by SCHAUFELI, W.B., DE WITTE, H. & DESART, S. (2020). HANDLEIDING BURNOUT ASSESSMENT TOOL (BAT) – VERSIE. The digital version is produced with kind permission of the original team of developers.
